No more BBM in Indonesia?

Upset with Research In Motion's (RIM) decision to build a server in Singapore instead of Indonesia, the country's Telecommunication Regulation Body (BRTI) has threatened to pull the plug on BlackBerry services.

"Because RIM has not been cooperative, it is possible that we will soon end BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) and BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) service. BlackBerry therefore, would just be like other cellular phones," BRTI member Heru Sutadi told The Jakarta Post.

BRTI feels it is necessary for a server to be located in Indonesia to monitor data exchanged through BBM for potential terrorism and corruption threats.

Earlier this year, the Canada-based company had committed to fulfilling four requests from the Indonesian government, including building a regional data center called a network aggregator. However, as it was not specified where it should be built, RIM established a router in Singapore instead.

It does not bode well for RIM, as the country is one of the company's biggest markets outside of North America, with an impressive 82.5% market share according to IDC.

This report adds to RIM's troubles in the country. A recent stampede for the BlackBerry Bold 9790 has already led to RIM Indonesia's President Director being suspected of negligence.
