Tech : Apple ready to drop Google's maps for its own

Apple ready to drop Google's maps for its own: Report

Longstanding relationship slowly being picked apart as first iPhoto and then entire maps app prepare to break from search engine's supply
Updated 07:48 PM May 12, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple is believed to be about to ditch Google as the provider of its mapping in the next major revision of iOS, the operating system that drives the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Instead it will introduce its own mapping solution including a 3D view and Street View-like product adapted from a number of companies including Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9 which it has acquired in the past few years.

If correct, the shift would mark a continuation of the company's shift away from Google-provided map data which was first noticed in March when it introduced its iPhoto app for iOS, which uses the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap product rather than Google to show locations.

9to5Mac is reporting that iOS 6, expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers' Conference between June 11 and 15, will introduce in-house mapping, citing "trusted sources".

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

The new maps would be built around Apple's own cloud computing system, which has been gradually rolled out with iCloud users, which it says now has more than 125 million users worldwide, reported The Guardian.

A key difference would be 3D representations using C3's maps, which use declassified missile target algorithms.

Though Apple's maps app in iOS uses Google's data, it has lagged behind that on Google's own Android OS since the introduction in December 2010 of Android 2.3, or "Gingerbread", which brought the ability to rotate the map onscreen - allowing the user to manipulate the map to align a street with their direction of view without moving the phone itself.

At the same time Google also introduced a 3D view and offline mode for maps. By contrast Apple's Maps app requires a data connection to function.

Google, it is known, pays Apple handsomely for its position as the search engine of choice on iOS devices (the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) which make up a substantial part of mobile search queries. Equally, Google also has a prominent position as the provider of interactive maps (through the Maps app) on iOS, which has been there since the iPhone was introduced in January 2007.

But Apple is also believed to want to break its ties with Google in mapping, though not search, where it gets a substantial split of any revenues Google receives from ad clickthroughs. However, in June 2010 it added Microsoft's Bing as an option for search in iOS - on which it is likely it also gets a share of revenues.

Google and Apple renewed their mapping agreement in May 2011, which surprised some because Apple's job postings had included a number of vacancies for people with expertise in mapping. AGENCIES

Review: The Avengers

First of all I not a fan of marvel. More of DC comics then Marvel. With all the hype around this movies, I decide to watch it.

My point of view, the movie is just like others comics turn movie. Nothing so great just that it like a childhood dream watch your fav character on the big screen. The best part for me was the ending battle. Was good in a sense they manage to capture the fight way better then the earlier movies.

I only like captain america but not a big fan. So i just watch for him mostly. But hawkeye is nice too! But he never get big parts!!!!!

Here the synopsis:
S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) arrives at a remote S.H.I.E.L.D. facility during an evacuation. The Tesseract, an energy source of unknown potential, has activated and it opens a portal through space from which the exiled Norse god Loki (Tom Hiddleston) steps through. Loki takes the Tesseract and uses his abilities to take control of the minds of several S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel including Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and Agent Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) to aid him in his getaway. In response to the attack, Fury re-activates the Avengers Initiative. Agent Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johannson) is sent to India to find and recruit Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) while Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) approaches Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and requests that he review Dr. Selvigs research. Fury himself approaches Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) with an assignment to retrieve the Tesseract from Loki. During his exile, Loki encountered the Chitauri, an alien race seeking to conquer the galaxy. In exchange for the Tesseract, the Chitauri agree to help Loki subjugate Earth. Suiting up, Captain America and Iron Man travel to Germany to apprehend Loki, who is recovering iridium needed to stabilise the Tesseracts power, and demanding that the civilians kneel before him. Loki quickly surrenders when the two heroes arrive, and he is escorted back to a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, a high-tech, flying aircraft carrier. However, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki's half-brother and the Norse God of thunder, arrives and attempts to free Loki so he can try to reason with him on his own, but he gets into a fight with Iron Man and Captain America. Eventually, Loki is taken to the Helicarrier and placed in a cell designed to hold the Hulk. The Avengers argue and deliberate over how to approach Loki and the revelation that S.H.I.E.L.D. plan to harness the Tesseracts power to develop weapons. Fury admits that the events in New Mexico a year before made S.H.I.E.L.D. aware of other races on other worlds, some of which may see Earth as an easy target. The decision was made to produce weapons with the Tesseract as a means of deterrence. As the group argue, Clint Barton and Lokis possessed agents attack the Helicarrier, disabling its engines in flight. As Stark and Rogers attempt to restart the damaged engines, Thor tries to prevent Dr. Banner from turning into the Hulk and destroying the ship from inside. While fighting Barton, Romanoff discovers that a blow to the head powerful enough to knock him unconscious is enough to break Lokis mind control. By the end of the battle, Loki escapes, Thor and Dr. Banner have been ejected from the ship and Agent Coulson is killed. Fury uses Coulsons death to motivate the Avengers into working as a team. Stark and Rogers realize that simply defeating them will not be enough for Loki. He needs to overpower them in a very public way so as to validate himself as ruler of Earth. Using a device built by Dr. Selvig, Loki opens a portal to the Chitauri home world over Manhattan, summoning a Chitauri invasion. The Avengers rally in defense of New York, but quickly come to the conclusion that they will be overwhelmed as wave after wave of Chitauri descend upon Earth. With help from the reformed Barton, Captain America and Thor evacuate civilians while Dr. Banner transforms into the Hulk and goes after Loki, beating him into submission. Romanoff makes her way to the portal, and she hits Dr. Selvig over the head, freeing him of Lokis control. Dr. Selvig reveals that Lokis staff can be used to close the portal. Meanwhile, the directors override Fury and send a jet that fires a nuclear missile at Manhattan to end the invasion. Iron Man intercepts the missile and directs it at the portal and the Chitauri home world before running out of oxygen and plummeting back to Earth, but the Hulk catches him as he falls. Thor escorts Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard, while Fury notes that the Avengers will go their separate ways until such time as a new world-threatening menace emerges. In a post-credits scene, the Chitauri leader The Other tells his master that it is futile to attack Earth, as fighting The Avengers is like courting death. His master turns, revealing himself to be Thanos.

Preview: Movie Ghost on air

Got a chance to watch the local movie ghost on air. It was a preview. It was held at shaw centre preview theater. It was a theater where they preview new movies to critics and special guest to see how was the movies is. Maybe to censor also.

Was privilige to get to watch a local movies. I rarely watch local movies unless it good or i get to watch for free. Yes i admit free i watch.

To me it was a good movie. Just it too short. Should extend to around 2hrs. It end around 1 1/2hr. Too short for a movie that can expand and tell more of the stories.
The plot was good but lack of some suspend here and there. They never really explain some parts why it happen. Maybe you go watch and see if you can tell me i am wrong.

Okie here the synopsis;

Synopsis

A Radio DJ driven to desperation, resorts to telling ghost stories on air, but what if the stories were all not fiction?

“Ping Xiao, a two time “Most Popular DJ” award winner, is suddenly robbed of his successful morning show slot. Jealous at seeing a younger DJ taking his place, he forces himself to conquer painful recurring memories of his deceased girlfriend and tells the ghost stories that was written by her on air. With each painful memory he endures, he regains a small step to his superstardom. However, as he is about to claim his reward, he begins to realize that the stories were not works of fiction, and maybe it wasn’t him telling the stories all along…”
